Table Lamps for Autumn

October is when the lamps go on earlier and stay on longer, and a good table lamp can sometimes do far more than a ceiling light. A beautiful table lamp pulls the corners of a room in, warms up the space and gives your eye somewhere pleasant to land.

I've gathered eight that I'd happily put into a period home, from soft textile shades to a proper desk lamp with some history behind it. A few are on the pricier side, but they're the kind of items that will stick around forever - and I think worthy of an investment.

Stone and Ceramic Bases with Some Weight

A heavier base gives a lamp presence even when it's switched off. I really love the dark raffia shade of this Sézane lamp.

Soft Shades for a Gentle Glow

These two both use a soft cream or white fabric shade to soften the light, which is exactly what you want in a bedroom for reading and relaxing. Poem has a sculptural shape, made by spraying liquid textile over a steel frame, while Tafta is quieter and happy on a shelf or small side table.

Poem Table Lamp - Cashmere

€191.00

I love the almost cloud-like shape of this lamp. It feels sculptural without being too contemporary, and brings a lovely softness to a bedside table or cosy corner.

Edgeform

Tafta Table Lamp, Natural Beige

€220.00

Understated and elegant, with a beautiful textured shade. I particularly like this one for a bedroom, where you want something that feels warm and inviting without drawing too much attention.

Task Lamps with a Bit of History

I love a good desk lamp. The Kaiser Idell 6631 comes from a design by Christian Dell that dates back to 1926, with a steel and brass body, a hand-painted shade and a ball joint, and the dark green is a lovely change from the usual black. I also love a little chrome detail when a lot of people opt for brass.

The Vaughan Oxford is stunning with it's brass angular style and trapezoid hood. Either one makes a desk or a reading corner feel very considered.

A Little Drama

Not every lamp needs to blend into the background. Sometimes a bold colour or an unusual shape is exactly what a room needs, particularly if the rest of the scheme is fairly understated. I love using lighting as an opportunity to introduce something a little unexpected, without having to commit to a larger statement piece.

Orb Lamp, Olive

£325

I love this perfectly round little light from Hum London, the colour is spot on for 2026 and early 2027 too.

La Redoute

Remillo Table Lamp, Violet

€100.00

If you’d rather go a bit bolder, the Remilo from La Redoute comes in violet, with a round linen shade on a totem-like ceramic base. It’s a very different lamp from the Orb, more sculptural and of course a more affordable offering with a bit of drama, that adds dimension to any space.
